Innovating in the Blue Economy: the challenges and opportunities for SMEs

The first of a series of events organised by the Blue Economy Cluster Builder project in 2022.

In this webinar we will debate barriers and opportunities in creating and strengthening net zero technological innovation for the ocean. Issues of intellectual property rights, workforce, market barriers, multi-institutional collaboration arrangements and the necessities for financial incentives will be discussed in a panel composed by professionals from four different organisations that will build a holistic overview about innovation led by SMEs operating in the Scottish Blue Economy.

Speakers will include:

  • Sara Holland from Potter Clarkson to speak about barriers and benefits for SMEs to secure their intellectual property rights;

  • Amanda Ingram from Zero Waste Scotland to speak about the challenges for innovators to overcome market barriers for new-entry disruptive net-zero technologies;

  • Elaine Jamieson from Highlands and Islands Enterprise to speak about the role of SMEs operating in the Blue Economy in leading the net zero transition through innovation and job creation;

  • Lynsey Dunbar from IBioIC and the BioEconomy Cluster Builder to provide an overview about the lessons learned from multi-institutional arrangements in research projects and their contribution in creating an ecosystem of disruptive innovators.
