Join the BBIA and Lord Deben for a frank discussion about the role of the bioeconomy in creating a sustainable future for the UK.
Economic and environmental benefits of a transformative UK bioeconomy
At our present consumption rate, by 2030 we will need two planets to meet both our resource needs and absorb societies waste.
We live in a time that calls out for change – for sustainable solutions to ever more severe problems.
For a step change to happen, we need a revolution – much like that of the industrial revolution - but this time, we need a bio-based revolution…one that works with nature, and not against it. Enter the bio-revolution, driven by the industrial bioeconomy.
The industrial bioeconomy is an economic system in which biological resources, such as plants, animals, and microorganisms, and their by-products are used to produce a wide range of products, including chemicals, where waste from one process becomes a resource for another.
The industrial bioeconomy in the UK in 2014 has been estimated to have contributed to £220 billion of output across the UK economy, supporting 5.2 million jobs.
Building a world-class industrial bioeconomy will transform our economy by removing our dependence on finite fossil resources. Bioscience and biotechnology has the potential to create new solutions that are economically and environmentally sustainable as well as resource efficient. These solutions will help to tackle global challenges and create opportunities in agri-food, chemicals, materials, energy and fuel production, health and the environment.
As we enter a new chapter and launch our BBIA Strategy: 2024-2027, we welcome key stakeholders from across the industrial bioeconomy to join us for this important parliamentary event, where attendees will have the opportunity to:
Hear about the economic and environmental benefits of a transformative UK bioeconomy
Find out more about the BBIA, and our new strategy
Hear from BBIA members about their products and services and the role they play in the industrial bioeconomy
Meet key policy makers and discuss the challenges that the sector faces, and what interventions are needed to allow a truly transformative UK bioeconomy to flourish
Network with other key players in the industry
About the BBIA
The Bio-based and Biodegradable Industries Association (BBIA) exists to champion the industrial bioeconomy to accelerate the development and adoption of bio-based and biodegradable materials and products through advocacy, collaboration, and education. We do this to reduce the impact of human consumption on the planet. Our vision is for a more sustainable future, where the UK is a global leader in developing, manufacturing, using and exporting bio-based and biodegradable solutions. We unite those working in the bio-based and biodegradable industries, through advocacy, collaboration, and education, to put the industrial bioeconomy at the centre of sustainability and economic growth in the UK.
