Extraction of Algal Biomass

MiAlgae is an innovative Edinburgh-based biotech company with a zero waste technology for producing Omega 3 rich algae from industrial by-products for use in aquaculture and pet food products.

MiAlgae successfully carried out early stage bioprocess development work within IBioIC's bioprocessing facilities in Glasgow and Edinburgh. Our Technical Team provided support to the company's scientific team on a series of studies firstly looking at smaller scale screening to take forward to larger scale studies.

Pilot fermentations up to 30L scale were performed and staff were on hand to support and monitor the progress of the cell growth over the course of the experiments and to provide advice and help with troubleshooting as required.  A comparison of cell harvesting by batch and continuous disk-stack centrifugation was also undertaken in partnership and the results were used to develop, refine and de-risk their processes.

MiAlgae have subsequently expanded significantly and have continued this success by securing grant funding and private investment to further progress their business. The company continues to access analytical equipment within our facilities as their internal studies require.

Working with IBioIC allowed MiAlgae to carry out work that would simply not have been possible should the company have had to purchase the equipment outright. This combined with the technical support and expertise stood MiAlgae in good stead to raise the finance required begin scale-up operations. MiAlgae will continue to work closely with IBioIC in the future, and would recommend their facilities to any aspiring biotech start-up.
