It has been estimated that the global textile industry creates over 144 million tonnes of waste annually. Each stage of the product lifecycle generates astounding volumes of waste per annum - 36m tonnes for garment production; 11m tonnes associated with retail and 68m tonnes at end of life.
Given the scale and complexity of the problem there is no straightforward solution, however, developments in biotechnology offer promising solutions to several waste management challenges. A critical aspect in the development of bio-based innovation is collaboration and shared understanding between biotech scientists and entrepreneurs and stakeholders in textile design, manufacturing and retail.
This networking session has now been opened to general registration and is dedicated to sharing knowledge and building connections between these communities. At its heart is the Generation of Waste creative installation, first exhibited as part of Cop26, which dramatically illustrates the challenges (and opportunities) presented at each stage of the textiles value chain. Attendees are invited to engage with stations around the space showcasing examples of biotechnology solutions to industry challenges.
