The range of interesting modules convinced Rachel to apply for our MSc programme.

MSc student Rachel McGhee told us about her ambition to be a Project Manager in the life sciences industry and that advances in gene-editing, AI, and medical devices could be the next big innovation in IB.

Why did you undertake this MSc?

After studying BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science and undertaking an NHS placement, I had a feel for the clinical route, however, wanted to broaden my knowledge and get experience in the industry. I thought the MSc looked interesting with modules such as Renewables, Bioinformatics and Synthetic Biology.

What are your ambitions for the future?

In the future, I would like to work in the life sciences industry as a Project Manager. Which would allow me to apply my skills learned from my MSc and allow me to be involved in various different projects.

What has been your favourite part of the MSc?

My favourite part of the MSc was the bioinformatics module at Edinburgh University. I like that the MSc is collaborative which allows travel to all of the Universities and visiting new campuses. I really liked the content taught on the Bioinformatics module and found it very interesting.

Where/ what do you think the next innovation in IB will be?

I believe there will be more innovations in the gene-editing field with more advances in using CRISP-Cas9 etc. I also believe AI and medical devices will be a field that can only continue to grow.

What do you enjoy doing away from your studies?

Away from my studies I intern for CENSIS and SULSA and work on lots of projects within the life-sciences industry.
