Glasgow School of art are seeking a Regenerative Materials and Prototyping Technician to join the Technical Support Team (TSD) at their beautiful and inspiring Highlands and Islands Campus near Forres. They are looking for an inspired and motivated team player who will enjoy working in a creative and dynamic educational environment. The successful candidate will be responsible for the development and day-to-day operation of the new Regenerative Materials Lab in partnership with the other two Technicians, working as part of the TSD Altyre team.

You will support and maintain a welcoming and accessible Altyre community Maker Space responsive to student and staff needs while ensuring compliance with health and safety guidelines and best practice.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain The Regenerative Materials Lab, ensuring safe biomaterials experimentation.

  • Conduct and document inductions for workshops, studios, and maker spaces.

  • Plan and deliver skill sessions with academic and technical staff.

  • Inspect equipment and report maintenance needs.

  • Align procedures, training, and communication with GSA guidelines.

  • Complete health and safety documentation per regulations.

  • Recommend and source materials for testing and use.

  • Develop regenerative material recipes and guides.

  • Ensure quality support and contribute to future improvements.

  • Communicate effectively within the TSD Team and provide absence cover.

  • Attend training and participate in GSA staff development.

  • Flexible scheduling and occasional evening work as needed.

  • Handle administrative tasks and other duties as assigned.

You should be qualified to HND level (or above) or have equivalent experience in regenerative materials such as mycelium, bio plastics, bio composites and bio based material design and prototyping. You should be able to provide innovative new material solutions to creative problems using novel techniques and recipes, as well as being able to blend traditional hand-crafted production skills with current innovations. As a new facility, you will be able to contribute to the direction of this exciting area and with the Altyre team grow this unique space for the future development of new materials.
