Extraction of Nitrogenous Material from Seaweed

The project will attempt to characterise, remove and if possible recover proteins from Laminaria hyperborea stem seaweed within the context of adding value to MBL’s existing protected and proprietary Seaweed Pre-treatment process (SPT). The project aims to achieve not just improved quality of current products and potential new by-products from seaweed through a successful outcome, but also to achieve a high-impact gain in the SPT process through a simpler alginate extraction process linked to protein recovery. This project also aims to provide a clear pathway to ultrapure alginate and cellulose/nanocellulose products. These are the two saccharide components of highest content, and hence revenue potential, in Laminaria Hyperborea, and MBL intends to use the protein removal/recovery process step in its full-scale Seaweed Biorefinery facility (Seaweed Pre-treatment plus alginate/cellulose)
