IBioIC and High Value Biorenewables joint targeted Proof of Concept call.

*This call is now closed to new applications. Please see below for details of the extended deadline for final submissions.*

Targeted call:

  • High value biorenewable products or processes for industry – projects require industrial support. IBioIC will provide support to industry-driven projects involving one of IBioIC’s academic partners. HVB will support all other short-listed applications.

The High Value Biorenewables Network (HVB) is one of six Phase II BBSRC Networks in Industrial Biotechnology and Bioenergy (NIBB) funded for five years from January 2019.
HVB aims to:

  • Promote discovery, development and application of bio-based chemicals, tools and platform technologies
  • Facilitate partnership and knowledge transfer between UK academia and industry
  • Provide inspirational leadership to the industrial biotechnology community in the UK and internationally

For this call, HVB have partnered with IBioIC. IBioIC is part of the Scottish Funding Council’s Innovation Centre Programme and connects industry with academic expertise and government to accelerate and de-risk commercialisation, to bring new biotechnology processes and products to the global market. It does this by offering scale-up facilities, talent development, funding provision, networking opportunities and promotion of Scotland's unique assets.

All projects that apply to this call will be considered under HVB’s funding guidelines. Any projects that additionally meet IBioIC’s funding guidelines and indicating a wish to be considered for funding by IBioIC, will also be considered by IBiolC for funding.

COVID-19: Help for PoC applicants – flexible deadline

We appreciate that work has not yet fully returned to normal: we understand the delays caused by the numerous challenges COVID-19 has caused. However, we also have to balance our own challenges and the need to undertake a robust review process. Therefore, we can offer a flexible deadline for our forthcoming PoC call - HVB members will still need to submit an application by the deadline but we will allow a final application to be submitted a week later.

The process to follow is:

  • Applications should be submitted by 10:00 on Monday, 14th September. The partners list, title and abstract should be final and we will not permit changes after this date. The rest of the text can be a draft which you can continue to work on.
  • If you would like to refine your application, please mention this in the cover email. If you can – please mark sections of the form with ‘to follow’ – in this way we will know that your response is incomplete.
  • Submit your final application before 10:00 on Monday, 21st September.

To be fair to all applicants, there can be no exceptions to this process.

After the deadline on the 14th September, the outline details of all eligible applications will be circulated to our reviewers to check for conflict of interest.

The Network will check all applications on the 21st September and you will be emailed if we require any clarification before the full review process which starts from the 22nd September.

If you require any help or further clarification, please email Caroline Calvert direct: but applications should be sent to
