Oceanium is a bio-tech, social and environmental impact start-up focused on developing sustainable packaging from sustainably-farmed seaweed.   Based in Oban Scotland with an office in London, Oceanium is seeking a senior level executive with extensive business, R&D and commercialisation experience with bio-based packaging materials including film, board and coastings.   Your expertise with bio-based packaging will provide the knowledge, contacts and skills to direct the second phase of R & D into pilot phase and trials.    

The Packaging Director will direct the research, development, and design of new bio- materials. You will provide technical support to Oceanium Executive Team including sourcing of materials and strategize regarding processor/manufacturing processes/partners and commercialization.

You will be fluent in commercial material performance requirements, materials structure/properties, testing and characterization, and leverage advanced knowledge of material conversion processes, regulations, techno-economic analysis, joint development agreements (JDAs) and the packaging market.  We encourage anyone who is passionate about sustainability and the environment, entrepreneurial in nature, takes the initiative and approaches problem solving with curiosity and imagination to apply.

Key Qualifications
• You will be a packaging expert with 10-15 years of experience covering all aspects of premium single-use packaging, ideally with bio-based films, coatings and fibre products.

• You will have a proven track record of overseeing creation of innovative packaging materials from early stage to commercialisation including product development, testing & analysis, partnership development, trials and commercialisation strategy.

• You will have experience creating and implementing the overall strategy and operational plans for new packaging products including techno-economic analysis, risk assessments, life cycle analysis (LCA), consumer and end user attitudes and perceptions.

• You will have attention to detail, an in depth understanding of material structure and property/performance relationship, experience developing materials to meet client criteria and requirements and work with existing packaging machinery/technology.

• You will be a critical thinker, entrepreneurial in spirit, innovative, creative, pay attention to detail and data collection/dissemination and a problem solver.

• Responsible for direction and oversight of novel, innovative bio-packaging material development from early stage through to commercialisation
• Provide input and oversee development of packaging material, film and board prototypes to meet market criteria and regulations with CTO, material scientists and packaging partners
• Conduct techno-economic analysis, risk assessments, provide data and information for LCAs
• Direct consumer research and human-centred design study to include stakeholder mapping, development user requirement specs
• Input on JDAs, contract negotiations, sales agreements
• Input on designing and develop new iterations and next gen bio-packaging materials
• Horizon scanning including new opportunities, threats
• Provide updates on relevant market and technological innovations
