The Person:
Because of the rapid nature of its growth, Oceanium is seeking an experienced Materials Scientist / Chemist and IUK Grant Project Manager to join their team to build on the team’s innovative home compostable, marine safe  bioackaging product.

The ideal candidate for this role is a confident, committed and passionate individual who is interested in making valuable contributions to an exciting, early stage business.  The candidate should be a person who is keen to take the initiative, has a proven track record with bio-based packaging product innovation, and is comfortable in a fast-paced environment.

Job Description
The Materials Scientist/Project Manager role is for a high profile, high impact Innovate UK grant to achieve TRL 6 for Oceanium’s in demand seaweed-based circular life-cycle biopackaging.

The Materials Scientist is well versed in all phases of the packaging product development cycle and can work independently to develop new products from concept through to plant scale-up. It’s the Materials Scientists responsibility to ensure that products are produced to meet industry requirements through inventing new concepts and manufacturing process.       

• Strong working knowledge of biopolymer chemistry and their applications in packaging.
• Seeks out information/facilities to get the job completed. Collaborates with internal and external resources (suppliers, consultants, academics, service providers and other third-parties) to find solutions.
• Executes experimental design and analysis work at benchtop and pilot scale.
• Writes, structures and executes project plans.
• Prepares clear and concise written reports, presentations and data so it’s ready with little or no editing required by supervisor. Maintains fully traceable documentation.
• Ensures material samples are prepared to appropriate standards and procedures are followed.
• Guides or executes experimental and analytical work, pilot plant scale-up and commercialization as required by the project.
• Liaises with other project scientists and contractors to co-ordinate product analysis and reporting.
• Generation of label data and all product specifications.
• Interfaces with supervisor and potential customers to understand their needs and establish project deliverables, plans and designs specific activities.
• Ensures all work is treated as confidential, meets current safety, and legal compliance.
• Keeps up to date and educated on relevant packaging materials literature and news.

Qualifications and experience:
• Bachelor of Science Degree in a materials related field (e.g. Chemistry, Materials Science, Polymer Science).
• Proven experience in the packaging related industries.
• Has worked within a blue-chip company or in applications on behalf of clients or customers.
• Practical experience in product development, can demonstrate end to end development including running factory trials.
• Can demonstrate the ability to manage internal or external clients / stakeholders.
• Advanced user of Micosoft Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint.
• Good understanding of current packaging legislation.

A full driving license is desirable, although not required for the role.

Remuneration:   A remuneration rate of £40-50K per annum depending on experience applies to this role.  Extensive travel within UK will be required and some travel in the EU may be required.
