NCIMB maintains the National Collection of Industrial, Food and Marine Bacteria, the largest reference collection of industrially useful and environmentally important microorganisms in the UK, and we supply our reference strains to customers around the world. Our growing range of services includes microbial identification & enumeration, DNA sequencing, genomics, metagenomics, and bioinformatics, as well as chemical and radiological analysis, and the storage of microbes, plant seeds and plant tissue culture.

Our success has been built on a highly customer-focussed approach and the strong relationships we develop through excellent communication and the delivery of high-quality services. We have set ambitious growth targets and envisage that we will meet them through the continued development and growth of these relationships with our partners and customers.

We are now seeking a highly motivated individual to play an integral part in the realisation of our growth plans. The post presents an excellent opportunity for someone with business development experience in the life sciences (microbiology, genomics or sequencing) area and who is interested in joining a great team who are proud of our past and excited about our future.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Create and deliver a business development strategy for annual double-digit growth across the company.
  • Proactively account manage and develop strong business relationships with current and new customers.
  • Build a distributor network for core NCIMB products, maintaining and strengthening existing distributor relationships.
  • Fully understand NCIMB’s business reach and deliver compelling propositions that demonstrate the benefits and impacts of our offerings to the customer’s business.
  • Effectively manage the sales pipeline to increase growth and market share in the UK and International markets.
  • Visit customers and represent NCIMB at external meetings and events.


Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

The ideal candidate for this position will be educated to degree level preferably with a life sciences background and formal qualifications in life sciences and/or business and marketing related subject areas. Applicants should:

  • Have an understanding of the life sciences market (preferably with a focus on microbiology, genomics or sequencing) and be highly competent at researching and engaging with organisations to deliver priority leads.
  • Have a customer-centric approach and an ability to build relationships at different levels within organisations.
  • Be able to be a brand ambassador, promoting and protecting our brand values.
  • Understand how to apply commercial and financial principles to improve performance; understand costs and develop pricing.
  • Have strong interpersonal and influencing skills that gain respect from customers, agents and distributors as well as internal stakeholders at all levels.
  • Be able to demonstrate highly effective presentation and communication skills.
  • Be proficient in English; fluency in additional language(s) would be beneficial.
  • Be a goal-oriented, self-starter with excellent time management skills.
