Background on the Location and Position:
Kerry Fermentation facility in Menstrie, near Edinburgh is a global manufacturing site producing Yeast based ingredients for the food, nutrition and Pharma markets. Responding to market trends in Taste and Nutrition for clean label, nutritious ingredients, the site has continued to expand. As a Senior Scientist , the role is looking for a creative and innovative thinker with a track record in technical competence and expertise, to drive development and innovation programmes in fermentation and extraction.

About the Role:
The role will leverage strong knowledge and experience in the Biotechnology sector, to underpin Research and Development projects, and understand key Operational issues to solve problems and deliver projects in a timely manner. The role represents an exciting challenge to join the global community of Senior Scientists, each with their respective expertise, to drive technical competence within the business.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Able to apply chemical and biochemical principles to the downstream processing of biomass and metabolites
  • Adapting technologies and innovating in the relevant scientific area
  • Develop cost efficient robust recipes and processes through a thorough understanding of microbial fermentation and metabolism.
  • Development of strong knowledge of Kerry fermentation and down-stream extraction processes and acts as a key technical advisor to other colleagues in product development.
  • Manage and deliver key customer development projects
  • Reviews scientific literature to guide thinking on specific projects
  • Ensures product developments meet legislation requirements in the regional or global markets where sales are expected, including any special criteria for the relevant category
  • Fosters and grows links with external research institutions to grow the technology
  • Participates in designated RD&A projects and ensures appropriate documentation of experimental trials and outcomes to facilitate scale up and product transfer to manufacturing
  • Act as a key technical advisor to other colleagues in product development
  • Researches and advises on improvement of existing products and development of new products
  • Plays a key role in the development of new scientific innovations within the R,D&A team
  • Communicate, influence and participate actively in strategic project planning

The perfect profile for this role:

  • Post Doctorate or PhD level in Bio Technology/Sciences (Biochemistry, Microbiology) or other related fields
  • 5 Years Post Qualified Experience
  • Familiar with the biology and biochemistry involved in industrial fermentation systems
  • The ideal candidate will have proven track record in scientific paper publications and industry experience. Demonstrates a keen interest in ingredients and biotechnology processes. Demonstrates an enquiring mind , with focus on solving problems . A strong communicator, capable of interpreting complex industrial biotechnology processes and setting clear targets for self and team to advance the portfolio and product development programme.
